Xero vs QuickBooks vs Zoho Books: 2026 Comparison for SMEs

Xero, QuickBooks and Zoho all get the basics right — but they diverge sharply on multi-currency, payroll and country coverage. Here's how to choose.

Country coverage

Xero dominates in the UK, Australia and New Zealand. QuickBooks Online dominates in the US and Canada. Zoho Books is strongest in India, the UAE and other GCC countries thanks to local VAT localisations and pricing.

For cross-border groups, the choice is usually 'best in class per country' rather than 'one system for everything'.

Multi-currency and consolidation

All three handle basic multi-currency, but only Xero and QuickBooks Advanced deliver serious consolidation. For a group of 3+ entities across countries, expect to pair the bookkeeping tool with a consolidation layer (Fathom, Spotlight Reporting, LiveFlow or dbt).

Payroll and integrations

Xero Payroll is strong in the UK and Australia; QuickBooks Payroll is US-only; Zoho Books integrates deeply with Zoho People. For US payroll, most SMEs pair QuickBooks or Xero with Gusto or Rippling.

The ecosystem matters more than the core: pick the tool whose top 5 integrations you'd actually use.
